They come from a modern day earth plagued with 'anomalies.' A blue fog appeared one day and with it brought monsters and reality bending phenomena. Furthermore, due to the blue fog, certain individuals gain special abilities. However, these powers come with a cost - either a continuous sacrifice, or one large sacrifice to be able to use them. In this world, to combat the anomalies, an organisation was established. It has several branches around the world, hiring individuals with these special abilities to protect, combat and investigate the fog and the anomalies.
Despite the dark circles and the constantly tired look on their face as though they haven't slept in years, Thirteen is surprisingly outgoing in a lazy sort of way. They have a way of slipping into conversation, calmly, naturally, taking most things in stride. "It comes with old age~" they say in a sagely tone barely three decades old while blowing a plume of grey with a distinctly dank stench. It seems more like they're too tired to give much energy over things that appear too troublesome. They prefer to take a light-hearted tone when dealing with problems, maintaining a calm attitude while problem-solving. On the surface, this is how they come off to most.
It's a common misconception to equate her sloth-like attitude with irresponsibility; rather, it cannot be farther from the truth. While they have a flexible approach to work, Thirteen gets the job done consistently and follows through with their word, even if it's an offhand promise to hang out later or buy you that drink they mentioned in passing.
Under the calm breeze and sleepy grins lies an ocean of disappointment. Due to their experiences, they carry a less-than-optimistic view of the world and hold little to no expectation of others. They don't believe in promises; they're careful of the ones they make. Trust is too heavy a burden to place on another. It's better not to expect anything at all. It's okay if you don't follow through; they never believed in you anyway.
That's probably why they come off so vague. The distrust carries over all aspects of their life, protecting themself from further disappointment. They're more interested in you anyway, often bringing the conversation around to focus on you than themself. They'd rather listen to the sound of your voice than bore you with their drawl.
Despite how interested they seem of you, they hardly share much of themself. What little they do share typically are surface level, trivial information more so to appease and quench curiosity than allow a deeper connection.
Beneath all that lies a character who is detail-oriented and methodical in nature. With a direct approach, they seek practical and rational solutions. This isn't to say that Thirteen is cold or unemotional - quite the opposite. They are a deeply caring person, which often conflicts with the choices they have to make. But in the end, between their head and their heart, they will squash the latter to follow the former. Though, there are rare moments when the heart my trump the mind.
There's nothing interesting about her past she'll say. A little prying and she might share how her parents divorced when she was seven but she was never very sad about it because it was better that way- the house was much more peaceful, quiet. She still got to see her dad some weekends growing up until he found another woman and got a new family. But at that point she'd grown up already, didn't need to see him so much anymore, and it was getting tiring ping-ponging between her parents. It worked out better for her. She thinks she probably has a half-brother she's never met.
As for her mom? She moved on pretty quick- again and again- cycling through different men until they fuck up once and they're dropped forever without a second chance. Mom always said 'never settle for less,' so she never settled at all because her mom never did.
Any more than that and you'll have to pay up for more information. Nothing comes for free, and certainly not her trust.
Thirteen followed their father's footsteps into law enforcement, hoping that it would make him proud and bring him closer. Instead, it only further strained their relationship with their mother.
Diligently, they graduated high school early, taking up a major in Psychology. They were in a rush to be just like their father. They weren't satisfied being a regular cop, they wanted to do something dangerous, something risky, and most of all: something that mattered.
Despite their skills, wit and hard-work, none of their achievements ever mattered on the field. As a uniformed patrol officer, they were delegated all the boring, easy jobs, and it was clear that it had more to do with what's in their pants than proof of their capabilities. After years of missed promotions, and corrupt leadership, they grew bitter and disillusioned with their life and purpose. They became like a zombie, going through the motions than someone living.
It wasn't until they almost lost their life did they come to their senses.
A near-death experience during a patrol one night with an anomalous creature awakened their abilities. The nasty scar across their nose a reminder of that moment. Escaping by the skin of their teeth and an ability that allowed them to pass through walls, they were soon recruited to be part of the organisation. It didn't take much to quit their job. The fear and rush of being so close to death, standing on the edge of a thin thread made them feel the most alive.
A year into their new job, they found themself sinking to the bottom of a lake, strange red flowers blooming from their chest having sacrificed their life for another.
